Mental health difficulties such as anxiety or low mood are not a part of autism, they are co-occurring conditions.
Mental health difficulties can be more prevalent in autistic folk due to our lived experience of:
- Stigma
-Masking
- Marginalisation
- Oppression
- Unmet needs
When we categorise a mental health difficulty as part of autism, we become complacent in our thinking around mental health and autism. This impacts and limits mental health support for autistic folk and leads to further:
- Stigma
-Masking
- Marginalisation
- Oppression
- Unmet needs
Which perpetuates he cycle of expecting autistic people to experience mental health difficulties.
